Exam Notes is built local-first. Your classes, students, recordings, and transcripts live on your device. The only data that leaves it is what you deliberately share with a student — and that is end-to-end encrypted before upload. There are no ads, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind.
When you save feedback, the app uploads a copy to Apple's CloudKit so the student or parent can read it via their QR code. That copy contains the student's first name, class name, subject, grade level, assignment title, and the feedback text. It is encrypted with a key derived from the QR code's secret — only someone holding the QR code can decrypt it. Neither we nor anyone browsing the database can read it.
Teachers use Exam Notes to record their own pedagogical notes. The teacher remains responsible for the student information they enter and for complying with their school's data policies. We (the app developer) never receive or access this data.
Deleting feedback, a student, or a class in the app also deletes the corresponding encrypted cloud copies. Teachers can revoke a student's QR code at any time ("Regenerate QR"), which invalidates the old one.
The Teacher Pro subscription is processed entirely by Apple. We never see your payment details. Manage or cancel any time in Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions.
This site is static: it decrypts feedback locally in your browser using the QR code's secret, which stays in the URL fragment and is never sent to any server. The site sets no cookies and talks only to Apple's CloudKit servers.
Under the GDPR and similar laws you may request access to or erasure of personal data. Since all data lives on the teacher's device or in encrypted form under the teacher's control, please direct requests to your teacher; for anything else, contact us below.
